Most of the industrial facilities are semi-permanent steel constructions with complicated structure, which, all the year round, are exposed to polluted environments where corrosion takes place very easily. In order to use coating to protect those facilities and equipments, and consequently to prevent corrosion and maintain normal production, it is demanded to utilize high-quality paints and employ qualified painting personnel who posses correct knowledge about coating performances and appropriate working procedures. Therefore, to paint industry, it is truly an important issue to conserve the service life of industrial facilities by understanding the characteristics of every kind of paints, selecting appropriate paints for different applications, and performing correct painting procedures.

Referential example of estimating the paint consumption

  • Actual coating amount of the paint will be affected by the shape of the coated target, the type of paint, the climate conditions, the coating

    equipment and the workmanship, etc. In view of this, it may lead to significant loss and the coating area that can be covered will also be much less than the theoretical value.

    [Example] Area size of the coated target: 100 M2
    Paint used: Our No. 1001 epoxy finish coat
    Theoretical coating size per gallon: 38 M2 / Gal
    Design dry film thickness: 40μ
    Theoretical paint consumption: 100 ÷ 38 = 2.63 (gal)
    Manual brushing paint consumption (approx.): 2.63 x 1.4 = 3.682 (gal)
    Spray coating paint consumption (approx.): 2.63 x 1.7 = 4.474 (gal)

Painting Safety and Health

In general, paints are made of synthetic resin, which requires alcohol, ester, or another aromatic hydrocarbon with a low flash point as its dilution, and the vaporization of which is the main cause of explosion or fire during the painting process.

Due to its volatility and fats solubility, the solvent might be absorbed through the respiratory system and skin. Its difficult and slow elimination from the human body will cause hepatic failure or even liver cirrhosis, renal failure, and proteinuria.

The metallic compound powder in the paint and the powder from polishing may cause lead intoxication, silicosis, and other occupational diseases.
